What this measures

The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimate of the number of violent incidents experienced by people aged 16 and over in a 12-month period.

People often confuse this with

Police recorded crime ≠ Crime Survey estimateRecorded crime counts offences the police record. The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimates crimes experienced by households, including those never reported. Recording practice changes move the police figure without any change in crime; the survey does not cover crimes against businesses or homicide.

What this doesn’t measure

Homicide, sexual offences, violence against people under 16, or violence reported to but not experienced by survey respondents.

Important caveat

The Crime Survey for England and Wales asks a sample of households about their experience of crime in the previous 12 months. It is a survey estimate with a margin of error, covers people aged 16 and over living in households, and does not cover crimes against businesses, homicide, or crimes with no direct victim. The survey was suspended during the pandemic, so there are no estimates for the years ending March 2021 and March 2022.
