Data gaps
Each entry is a question people ask of official data, classified by what is actually published. The classification describes availability, never intent. Each page says what is known, what is not, why, which authority holds the data, whether a Freedom of Information request would help and what privacy rules apply.
The status vocabulary
- Available
- An official publication answers the question directly. Where it is not yet on this site, the entry says so.
- Derivable
- No publication gives the figure, but it can be calculated from official figures. The calculation is shown as a Civometry calculation with its numerator, denominator and formula.
- Partial
- Official data answers part of the question: some categories, some years, some geographies or one stage of a process.
- Fragmented
- The data exists but is held by many authorities separately, with no national compilation; coverage has to be tracked authority by authority.
- FOI required
- The data is held by a public authority but not published; a Freedom of Information request is the route to it.
- Not published
- The data is recorded, or could be produced from records, but no authority publishes it.
- Not collected
- No authority records the information in the first place, so no request can produce it.
- Disclosure restricted
- The data is collected but is withheld or coarsened to protect individuals, under statistical disclosure control or data-protection law.
- Unknown
- We have not yet established what is published. The entry is a question, not an answer.
