Maps

One layer at a time, from the registry. Every polygon is a geography code with a value, numerator, denominator, period, source and vintage behind it; nothing is drawn for decoration. Areas without a current value are hatched, never coloured.

Basemap: none. No third-party tiles are loaded; boundaries are drawn on a plain background. An OS Maps API key adds an attributed OS background.

Crime · live · Local authority, Police force area

Police-recorded crime

Offences recorded by police and published in the data.police.uk street-level archive, aggregated to local authorities by offence location (LSOA lookup) and to police force areas, over rolling twelve-month windows. Rates use ONS mid-year resident population estimates. Anti-social behaviour is an incident type, not a recorded crime, and is excluded from "all".

  • Incident map (published approximate police locations, §17): not built yet.
  • Latest-month and 5-year-change periods (§16): the summary table carries 12-month windows only; the annual table will feed a 5-year period later.

Source: Home Office. Denominator: ONS mid-year resident population estimate for the area (local authority tables; a force's population is the sum of its local authorities). Residents only: visitors and commuters are not counted, so city centres and tourist areas show higher rates per resident.

Country of birth · live · Local authority

Country of birth (Census)

Usual residents by where they were born, from the Census of England and Wales, 2021 (TS004) and 2011 (KS204), official categories only. Country of birth is not nationality: it does not change, and someone born abroad may be a British citizen.

Source: ONS. Denominator: All usual residents in the area at the same census (the published total row).

Religion · live · Local authority, MSOA, LSOA

Religion (Census)

Usual residents by religion from the Census of England and Wales, 2021 (TS030) and 2011 (KS209), official categories only. Shares are of all usual residents including those who did not answer.

Ethnicity · live · Local authority, MSOA, LSOA

Ethnic group (Census)

Usual residents by ethnic group from the Census of England and Wales, 2021 (TS021) and 2011 (KS201), the 19 detailed official categories. Ethnicity is self-reported at the census and is never inferred from names, neighbourhoods or any other data.

Source: ONS. Denominator: All usual residents in the area at the same census (the published total row).

Ethnicity · live · Local authority, MSOA, LSOA

Cost of living · live · Local authority

Private rent a month (ONS)

Average monthly private rent by local authority from the ONS Price Index of Private Rents, for all lets and by number of bedrooms. The newest month published for each area; a mean, so a few expensive lets pull it up.

Source: ONS. Denominator: None (a published average per area). Percentiles rank the areas with a value for the newest month.

Cost of living · live · Local authority

Median annual pay, full-time employees (ONS)

Median gross annual pay of full-time employees by the local authority they live in, from the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (Table 8, place of residence). The middle earner: half of full-time employees living in the area earn more, half less.

Cost of living · live · Local authority

Band D council tax (MHCLG)

The Band D council tax set by each billing authority in England for the year ahead, from MHCLG's council tax levels tables: the bill for a Band D home including precepts for police, fire and the Greater London Authority where they apply, before any discount.

Source: MHCLG. Denominator: None (the published bill per billing authority). Percentiles rank the authorities with a value for the newest year.

Energy · live · Local authority

Domestic gas use per meter (DESNZ)

Mean annual gas consumption per domestic meter by local authority, from DESNZ's sub-national gas consumption statistics. Higher where homes are larger, older or colder; areas off the gas grid have few meters and their mean covers only the homes that have one.

Source: DESNZ. Denominator: None (a published mean per area). Percentiles rank the areas with a value for the newest year.

Energy · live · Local authority

Domestic electricity use per meter (DESNZ)

Mean annual electricity consumption per domestic meter by local authority, from DESNZ's sub-national electricity consumption statistics. Includes homes heated by electricity, which is why some rural and off-gas areas are high.

Source: DESNZ. Denominator: None (a published mean per area). Percentiles rank the areas with a value for the newest year.

Improving or not · live · Local authority

Improving or not: crime, rents, house prices, pay and council tax

For each local authority, how many of five published measures moved the better way over the latest twelve months, minus how many moved the worse way. Better means fewer recorded offences, lower rents, lower house prices, higher pay and lower council tax, all from the official series behind the other maps. The score runs from −5 (every measure worse) to +5 (every measure better); the drawer lists each measure's change so the score can be checked line by line. A Britain Measured calculation on published figures, not an official statistic.

Source: Civometry calculation on Home Office, ONS, HM Land Registry and MHCLG figures. Denominator: The number of the five measures with a published change for the area (shown as the denominator).

Work · live · Local authority

People claiming unemployment-related benefits (ONS)

The claimant count as a percentage of residents aged 16 to 64, published monthly by the ONS for every UK local authority. The percentage is the ONS's own; nothing is divided here. The newest month published for each area.

Source: ONS. Denominator: None is applied here. The ONS divides its own count by the area's residents aged 16 to 64 and publishes the percentage; this layer draws that published figure.

Crime · live · Local authority

Recorded crime in Scotland (Scottish Government)

Crimes and offences recorded by the police per 10,000 population, from Table 4 of the annual Recorded Crime in Scotland bulletin. The rate is the publisher's own, using National Records of Scotland mid-year population estimates. The newest financial year published for each area.

Recorded crime in Northern Ireland (PSNI)

Crimes recorded per 1,000 population, from Table 9.3 of the PSNI's annual recorded crime tables. The rate is the publisher's own, using NISRA mid-year population estimates. The newest financial year published for each district.

Source: Police Service of Northern Ireland. Denominator: None is applied here. The PSNI divides its own count by the NISRA mid-year population estimate and publishes the rate; this layer draws that published figure.

Country of birth · live · Local authority

International migration by local authority (ONS)

Long-term international migration into and out of each local authority in the year from one mid-year to the next, from sheet MYE3 of the ONS mid-year population estimates. Each figure is the ONS's own column: nothing is netted or summed here.

Source: ONS. Denominator: The count view draws the ONS's own figure of net moves, with nothing divided: a large area will show more moves than a small one for that reason alone. The per-1,000 view divides that figure by the area's ONS mid-year population estimate for the mid-year the period ends at - a Civometry calculation, not a published rate.

Deprivation · live · Local authority

Deprivation (IMD average score)

The population-weighted average Index of Multiple Deprivation score of each district's small areas, from the IoD2025 local authority district summaries. A higher score means the district's small areas are on average more deprived relative to the rest of England at one moment; scores are not comparable between index editions, so no change is mapped.

Source: MHCLG. Denominator: None (a published summary score per district). Percentiles rank the English districts with a published score.

Deprivation · live · Local authority

Income deprivation rate

The share of residents living in income-deprived families — on certain means-tested benefits or low-income tax credits — from the Income Deprivation Domain of IoD2025, averaged over each district's small areas. Unlike the headline IMD score, this is a proportion of people, so it is meaningful in itself and not only as a rank.

Source: MHCLG. Denominator: The domain score is itself a proportion of the resident population, published by MHCLG; no further division is done here.
