What this measures
The number of criminal cases received by the Crown Court in England and Wales during the quarter, including cases sent for trial or sentence, appeals against magistrates' decisions and requests for retrial.
What this doesn’t measure
Cases received by magistrates' courts, the number of defendants, or cases in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Important caveat
A receipt is a case received from the magistrates' courts in the quarter, including cases sent for trial or sentence, appeals of magistrates' decisions and requests for retrial. A disposal is counted once all offences for all defendants on the case have a final result recorded or have been remitted to the magistrates' court. From the October to December 2024 edition these figures come from the One Crown data pipeline and are not directly comparable with earlier editions of the table. Data before 2014 was produced on a different methodology.
