What this measures
The adult proven reoffending rate for each quarterly cohort, split by the offence group of the index offence that brought the offender into the cohort.
What this doesn’t measure
The offence type of the reoffence; rates for groups with fewer than 30 offenders are not published.
Important caveat
A proven reoffence is an offence committed in a one-year follow-up period that led to a court conviction or caution in that year or in a further six months. The cohort is offenders released from custody, given a non-custodial court disposal or cautioned in the quarter; offenders who could not be matched to the Police National Computer are excluded, so cohort numbers do not represent all proven offenders. Because of the follow-up and waiting periods the latest cohort is about 21 months old at publication. From the October to December 2015 cohort the data come from different sources and earlier cohorts are not directly comparable. Rates based on fewer than 30 offenders are suppressed.
