What we can't tell you · Not collected
What is the council tax bill in my Northern Ireland district, on the same basis as Band D elsewhere?
Not collected No authority records the information in the first place, so no request can produce it.
Why
Northern Ireland does not have council tax. Domestic property is charged domestic rates: a poundage struck each year by the district council, added to a regional poundage struck by the Northern Ireland Executive, and applied to the capital value of each property as assessed by Land & Property Services. There is no Band D, because there are no bands: a bill is a rate in the pound multiplied by one property's own valuation, so no single published figure stands for a district the way Band D stands for a billing authority in England, Wales or Scotland. The Department of Finance publishes the district and regional poundages as a page of HTML tables covering the three most recent years, with no machine-readable file and no back series. A poundage is not comparable with a Band D amount and is not shown beside one here.
What is known
What is not known
- Any figure for a Northern Ireland district comparable with Band D council tax
- A machine-readable file of district poundages, or any series before the three years on the page
- A published average or median domestic rate bill by district
Who holds the data
- Department of Finance (Northern Ireland)
- Land & Property Services
- The eleven district councils in Northern Ireland
Would a Freedom of Information request help?
Unlikely. The poundages are published. What is missing is a Band D equivalent, which no body holds because the Northern Ireland system has no bands to hold one for.
Privacy and disclosure restrictions
The valuation list gives the capital value of each individual property. Nothing on this site uses it, and no bill for an identifiable address is calculated here.
