What this measures
Usual residents on Census Day 2021 by the five broad ethnic groups of Census 2021 table TS021 (Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh; Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African; Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups; White; Other ethnic group). Each broad group is the published row, which equals the sum of its detailed groups exactly.
What this doesn’t measure
Nationality, country of birth, national identity, religion or language; the 2011 categories, which are worded differently.
Important caveat
Census 2021 counts usual residents on Census Day, 21 March 2021, as published by the ONS through Nomis. Every figure is an exact published count, but the ONS applies statistical disclosure control (record swapping and cell-key perturbation) before publishing, so small counts are slightly altered and the same total can differ by a few people between tables. Categories are the census questionnaire's tick boxes and write-in groups, self-identified; the labels here are exactly as published. Local authorities are the April 2023 boundaries Nomis publishes on, recoded to the April 2025 codes for Barnsley and Sheffield (same areas, new codes).
