What this measures

Duty received on tobacco products in the financial year.

What this doesn’t measure

Consumption of illicit tobacco, on which no duty is paid.

Important caveat

Receipts are cash received in the period, so they lag the activity being taxed: Self Assessment income tax and capital gains tax arrive up to a year later, and Corporation Tax arrives in instalments. Figures are in cash terms, so a rise partly reflects inflation and a growing economy rather than a heavier tax. Some taxes did not exist in earlier years and their columns are blank rather than zero. HMRC does not collect every tax: council tax, business rates, vehicle excise duty and the devolved Scottish and Welsh taxes are raised elsewhere.

No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
