What this measures

The number of applications for asylum made in the UK by main applicants, excluding dependants, in a calendar year, from the Home Office's old-format table as_01.

What this doesn’t measure

Dependants of applicants, people (the basis of the modern series from 2010), or applications made at UK posts abroad.

Important caveat

Applications for asylum in the UK by main applicants only, excluding dependants, from the Home Office's old-format table as_01 (last published May 2019). The Home Office notes that figures for 1989 to 1993 "were rounded to the nearest 5" and that "Data, after April 2000 for asylum applications and May 2000 for asylum decisions, have been taken from the Asylum Case Information Database. Prior to this date manual counts were taken." The modern asylum claims series counts people (main applicants and their dependants) from 2010, so the two are not the same measure and are shown separately.

When the way this was measured changed

A series can move because the thing being measured changed, or because the way of measuring it changed. Each change below is marked on the chart, and says what the figures meant on either side of it.

January 2010 · definition change

Before
Main applicants only.
After
People, meaning main applicants together with their dependants.

The modern asylum claims series (Home Office Asy_00a, from 2010) counts people, that is main applicants and their dependants; this series counts main applicants only.

Revision history

No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
