Possession of weapons: police-recorded by local authority

Offences recorded by police and published in the data.police.uk street-level archive, aggregated to local authorities by offence location (LSOA lookup) and to police force areas, over rolling twelve-month windows. Rates use ONS mid-year resident population estimates. Anti-social behaviour is an incident type, not a recorded crime, and is excluded from "all".

Ranked by offences per 1,000 residents, highest first; ties in alphabetical order. Areas without a value are not ranked.

What this map shows

302 of 318 local authority areas have a current value for possession of weapons (offences per 1,000 residents), 12 months to June 2026. 16 areas whose data ends before June 2026 are shown hatched as "no current data" and are excluded from class breaks and percentiles; their last complete year is on their own profile page. Classes are quantiles of the areas with data, computed on the server, so the same link always gives the same legend.

Source and method

Data
data.police.uk street-level crime, cumulative monthly archive (Home Office).
Denominator
ONS mid-year resident population estimate for the area (local authority tables; a force's population is the sum of its local authorities). Residents only: visitors and commuters are not counted, so city centres and tourist areas show higher rates per resident. Estimates of the population for England and Wales (mid-year), local authority tables.
Coverage
The data.police.uk street-level archive covers England and Wales. Police Scotland does not supply it, and Northern Ireland is published separately by the PSNI.
Boundaries
ONS Open Geography Portal generalised boundaries, Open Government Licence v3.0 (2025-05 BGC v2 LAD_MAY_2025_UK_BGC_V2).
Basemap
Ordnance Survey Maps API (Light), used under the OS Data Hub terms.
Formula
offences in the window ÷ resident population × 1,000
Stale areas
Areas whose force has stopped supplying data (latest window older than the site-wide current month) or whose window has fewer than twelve months are drawn as "no current data".
