Is your area getting better or worse?

Five things that are measured for every local authority, each compared with a year earlier: recorded crime, private rents, house prices, median full-time pay and Band D council tax. An area scores +1 for each measure that moved the better way and −1 for each that moved the worse way, so the score runs from −5 to +5. Every figure is the published one; the only judgement is which way is better, and that is stated below. A Civometry calculation, not an official statistic.

Every area is coloured by its score: each step is one more indicator moving the better (green) or the worse (red) way, and a score of 0 means as many moved better as worse. Areas with no usable comparison are hatched, never coloured. Click an area for its indicators, or search above for the full answer.

Ranked by measures better minus measures worse, highest first; ties in alphabetical order. Areas without a value are not ranked.

Choose the indicators

What “better” means here

  • Recorded crime: better when it falls.
  • Private rents: better when it falls.
  • House prices: better when it falls.
  • Median full-time pay: better when it rises.
  • Band D council tax: better when it falls.

Lower house prices are treated as better in the default calculation because they improve affordability for buyers. Existing owners may reasonably prefer rising prices, so a set that leaves house prices out is offered above.

How the score is worked out

Score = indicators better − indicators worse

Score for Derry City and Strabane
−1
  • Every indicator counts once. There are no weights and no thresholds.
  • Nothing is modelled or interpolated: each change is the newest published value against the value twelve months earlier, both as published.
  • An indicator that did not move counts for neither side.
  • An indicator with no published comparison for an area is left out and named. It is never counted as no change.
  • Which direction is better is a judgement, stated openly above, not something the data decides.
  • The score is a count, not an index: +4 is not “twice as good” as +2, it is two more indicators moving the better way.

This is a Civometry calculation on official figures, not an official statistic. It cannot say why anything moved. The score measures the balance of these selected indicators only. It does not mean an area as a whole became objectively better or worse. Method in full.

Sources and periods

Official datasets are released on their own timetables, so the twelve months are not the same twelve months for every indicator. Each row says which comparison was used.

Source and method

Data
data.police.uk street-level crime, cumulative monthly archive (Civometry calculation on Home Office, ONS, HM Land Registry and MHCLG figures).
Denominator
The number of the five measures with a published change for the area (shown as the denominator). data.police.uk street-level crime, cumulative monthly archive.
Boundaries
ONS Open Geography Portal generalised boundaries, Open Government Licence v3.0 (2025-05 BGC v2 LAD_MAY_2025_UK_BGC_V2).
Basemap
Ordnance Survey Maps API (Light), used under the OS Data Hub terms.
Formula
(measures that moved the better way) − (measures that moved the worse way), over the measures with a published change for the area
Stale areas
A measure that is stale for an area (its force stopped supplying crime data, or no value twelve months earlier) is left out of that area's score and named in the drawer; an area with no usable measure is drawn as no data.

What this does not measure

Direction is a judgement stated openly: lower house prices are treated as better because the score is about the cost of living in an area, not about owners' wealth. Pay is a survey year and council tax a financial year, so the twelve months differ by measure; each component shows its own period.
